the «Ovelook», which today is called «Timberline», is on fire

A fire broke out Thursday evening at Timberline Lodge in Mount Hood, Oregon. This is the Overlook Hotel where Stanley Kubrick he set the shots outdoors for his masterpiece Shining, based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King. The flames, caused by the burning ashes of one of the fireplaces and limited to the attics, were contained in a couple of hours thanks to the intervention of four teams of firefighters.

History

The Timberline Lodge was used to film the scenes in 1980 film with Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. Inaugurated on September 28, 1937 by the then president Franklin Delano Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor, it became a national monument in 1977. The design is the work ofarchitect Gilbert Underwood, known for his hotels within American national parks, like the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park in California, built as part of public construction to emerge from the Great Depression of the 1930s. Kubrick used the hotel for exterior scenes. The interiors were instead filmed in Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire (England).

No one injured

The Lodge is located about one hundred kilometers east of Portland, the capital of Oregon. The orderlies noticed the flames at around 9.30pm (local time) on Thursday. The intervention of the Clackamas fire brigade prevented the worst and at 9.12pm the fire was considered out. No one was injured, but the hotel, located at over 1,800 meters above sea level, was closed and the ski area is currently no longer accessible.

Location of many films

In addition to The Shining, the Timberline Lodge has also been used for filming in other films such as Where the river goes down (Bend of the River), a 1952 western by Antony Mann starring James Stewart; All the Young Mena 1960 film about the Korean War; Lost Horizona 1973 fantasy musical starring Peter Finch and Liv Ullman; Ski School of 1990; Hear No Evil, a 1993 thriller; And Wild of 2014 with Reese Witherspoon on a story by Nick Hornby.
