Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes it is already one of the most anticipated films of summer 2024, but director Wes Ball wanted to further tease fans of the franchise by anticipating an important connection with the original chapter of the saga.
“They are there in my film several Easter-eggs for fans of the original ’68 cult“, confirmed the director to Total Film, who also explained that one of the major links between his new film and the first chapter of the franchise will be represented by presence of the Forbidden Zone, described as a strictly no-monkey area. In the 1968 film Planet of the Apes, it was revealed that this forbidden area is what remains of the island of Manhattan, a revelation that leads to the legendary finale with the Statue of Liberty. In the original film, the area was off-limits to monkeys to keep the great secret of ‘their planet’ hiddenthat the Earth was once ruled by humans.
The star of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, Owen Teague (player of the ape protagonist Noa) explained to Total Film that the Forbidden Zone will return in the new film: “They are an isolationist society. It’s a small village but they have a territory. And Noa is not allowed to leave that territory. Most of the clan is kept within the borders.” Don’t expect the Statue of Liberty, however, as Wes Ball has confirmed that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be set on the West Coast of the United States.
The film will be released in theaters on May 8distributed by Walt Disney/20th Century Studios.
