Georgia upset, Spain to quarter-finals against Germany

COLOGNE (GERMANY) (ITALPRESS) – On July 5th in Stuttgart, Spain will play against host Germany in the quarterfinals of Euro2024. At the Rhein Energie Stadion in Cologne, the Red Furies beat Georgia 4-1, taking advantage of the physical and psychological decline of Sagnol’s men. After Le Normand’s own goal, Spain responded, in order, with Rodri, Fabian Ruiz, Nico Williams and Dani Olmo. However, Georgia returns home to applause. For a good portion of the first half, the Crusaders fans lived a dream, thanks to Le Normand’s unfortunate own goal. In the 18th minute, in fact, the Spanish defender, in an attempt to anticipate Kvaratskhelia, deflects Kakabadze’s insidious cross into the goal. Up until that point, Georgia had practically never crossed the halfway line, proving to be completely at the mercy of Spain’s ball movement. After the sensational disadvantage, De la Fuente’s boys lost a pinch of serenity even if Mamardashvili had to make two great interventions on Morata and Cucurella. The usual Rodri takes care of taking the chestnuts out of the fire: the Manchester City midfielder, in the 39th minute, manages to equalize with a precise shot from distance. At the start of the second half, Kvaratskhelia scares his opponents by trying to surprise Unai Simon from midfield who is culpably outside the posts: this occasion, in fact, represents Georgia’s last call. In the 51st minute, with cynicism, Spain completed the comeback, when Fabian Ruiz in front of goal corrected Yamal’s cross into the net. The Red Furies finally disbanded and in the 75th minute Nico Williams delivered the knockout blow, scoring the 3-1. Georgia is morally buried and Dani Olmo worsens the deficit to 4-1. Spain finished having fun and devouring a couple of goals with Yamal. Now head to Germany, appointment on Friday at 6pm.
