The pharmacy service is constantly evolving and increasingly crucial for citizens, in particular for those who live in small towns and in the most remote areas of the country, often without hospitals and specialist reference centres.
Precisely in light of the new skills of pharmacies also regarding the continuous monitoring of blood sugar levels in patients with diabetes, Federfarma Basilicata and the Diabetics Associations of the Basilicata area, in order to guarantee the right to health of citizens suffering from diabetes, have asked to review regional law 9/2010, to arrive at the inclusion of a Federfarma representative in the inter-institutional commission.
The centrality of pharmacies in the care of diabetic patients
The President of the Regional Federfarma, Anthony Guerricchiounderlined the centrality of pharmacies and services in diabetic care, «especially in the innermost part of the Region. A collaboration between pharmacy networks and associations that deal with diabetic patients would therefore be profitableIt is necessary to understand that the pharmacy must have a leading role in monitoring and caring for the diabetic patient which is logistically located far from the diagnosis and treatment centers”.
Pharmacies have a role of sentinels
The short-term goal is to define a collaboration between Federfarma Basilicata and Diabetes Patient Associations, in order to best meet the needs of patients.
In fact, Anthony Papaleohead of the Alad-Fand Association of the province of Potenza, and Dominic Troy president of the Diabetics Association of Matera, have underlined in this sense theimportance of involving pharmacies in prevention, entrusting them with the role of ‘sentinels’.
