In Rennes, these left-wing activists stunned by the first results

Around twenty activists and supporters of the New Popular Front gathered at the Babazula bar in Rennes on Sunday evening, June 30. The first figures, released at 8 p.m., also caused enthusiasm to drop, even though many confided that they “expected these results.”

“At this stage, the estimates on the seats mean nothing, it will depend on the triangular races, on potential withdrawals,” analyses this activist.

A few boos were contained when Marine Le Pen appeared on the television screen. And no particular enthusiasm when it was Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s turn to speak. He announced: “Gabriel Attal is no longer prime minister.” “To replace him with whom?” someone in the audience said. The leader of La France Insoumise was nevertheless applauded when he clearly called on each candidate of the New Popular Front to withdraw in the event of an unfavorable position.

Further on, at the campaign headquarters of New Popular Front candidate Marie Mesmeur, in the 1st constituency, Salomé, Toby and Johann, all 20 years old, share their impressions. “The evening began with hope, then with the announcement of the results, we understood that we were going to have to fight again,” notes Salomé. “We have to convince Macron’s voters,” analyzes Toby. “Prove to them that our project is feasible and in their interest.”

It is 9:30 p.m.: an activist reports that “there is a demonstration going on at Place Sainte-Anne”. Marie Mesmeur, for her part, sits down to analyse. “I am in the lead in this constituency and I thank the voters for having approved our project. I am counting on the humanism of the French to oppose the racist project of the RN.”
