A 12-year-old boy drowned this morning in Falconara Marittina (Ancona). His mother felt ill and was rescued. The mayor of the city Stefania Signorini and local police officers were on site.
The 12-year-old was born in Jesi and is of Nigerian origins: he attended the Raffaello Sanzio comprehensive institute, a Montessori lower secondary school.
The tragedy
The tragedy occurred this morning around 11.30, in the waters in front of the Falconara Marittima pier, near the Siesta establishment.
The little boy, who was in the company of some peers, dived and never resurfaced. The rescuers found the twelve-year-old stuck under the pier: in the execution of the dive, from the former Bedetti Platform, he may have hit his head and lost consciousness.
His friends, not seeing him resurface, raised the alarm: the first to intervene were the lifeguards, then the staff of the harbor master’s office and the municipal police, as well as the rescuers of 118 and an air ambulance that left the hospital regional of Torrette di Ancona. Once the body was identified, efforts to resuscitate it began, which lasted for about twenty minutes, but were unsuccessful. The twelve-year-old’s body has already been made available to the family.
The city mourning
From what we have learned, access to the pier and diving into the sea are prohibited. The magistrate on duty also arrived on site, together with the carabinieri, Ruggiero Dicuonzo: investigators will have to verify what happened, including the safety regulations in force in that area. The mayor, Stefania Signorino, proclaimed city mourning and canceled the scheduled events. Dismay among the boy’s teachers and classmates.
