CIVITELLA DEL TRONTO – The Earthquake Coordination Committee chaired by the Commissioner for Repair and Reconstruction of the 2016 earthquake Guido Castelli has reached an agreement on some changes to the Special Derogation Ordinance 66, dedicated to the reconstruction of Borrano, a hamlet of Civitella del Tronto (Teramo). Funding of 5.5 million euros has been set aside for the mitigation of landslides in part of the area, in addition to a series of measures to facilitate those subject to mandatory relocation.

In Borrano the earthquake, in addition to making part of the town uninhabitable, also accelerated a landslide, which, according to studies on the area, was only partially mitigable. For this reason it was necessary to relocate part of the houses, even if they were habitable. Also present at the Cabina works was the Abruzzo Region Councilor Umberto D’Annuntiis.

Commissioner Castelli also met the citizens of Borrano yesterday (28 June) together with the mayor Cristina Di Pietro, to illustrate the news and the action plan for the coming months.

Commissioner Castelli declared: “The Borrano affair immediately engaged the commissioner structure, together with the regional Civil Protection, the Municipality and the Special Reconstruction Office, to set up a strategy that would give certainty to this population. Years after the earthquake, unfortunately, studies have highlighted the need to evacuate houses due to the effects induced by the earthquake on the hydrogeological stability of the area. A necessary sacrifice in light of the principle of security that is inspiring the reconstruction. A safety which, inevitably, must also be the hydrogeological and static safety of the slopes. Together with Mayor Di Pietro we listened to the concerns of the Borrano community, whom I thank for the great spirit of collaboration and I reiterate that the commissioner structure will continue to assist all citizens in this difficult moment. I thank President Marsilio and the Director of the USR Vincenzo Rivera and Professor Sciarra of the D’Annunzio University, for having worked together in providing effective responses to the resolution of this situation, which we keep constantly monitored”.

Mayor Cristina Di Pietro declares: “I express satisfaction with the measures already adopted by Commissioner Castelli and the commissioner structure to address the difficult situation of Borrano. The special ordinance approved in the coordination cabin last Wednesday fully protects the rights of the inhabitants of Borrano, forced to abandon their home, recognizing their right to build a new home”.
