“Unfortunately, Ravenna gets talked about in a negative sense by ranking seventh among the most polluted cities. The general situation, now known, does not tend to improve and overruns have now become a constant. In fact, the problem, which has been known for many years, is not followed by any noteworthy corrective measures, and indeed, as always, we are waiting for critical levels of overshoot to be reached before intervening with solutions that are unfortunately very weak, if not simply superficial. Which consist of blocking the circulation of diesel vehicles, a slight lowering of ambient temperatures in homes as well as some other limitations. Initiatives limited to a few days, without controls, and which limit themselves to lowering the emergency a little and then returning to worrying values. In short, these are emergency measures implemented when the situation exceeds the permitted levels, while, instead, structural preventive interventions should be implemented.
The causes of this situation are truly many and certainly not easy to resolve, however certain issues emerge which systematically contribute to producing such negative data from an environmental point of view. The delivery of goods with diesel-powered vehicles, for example, especially in the urban centre, represents a serious environmental danger but alternative experiments to the existing ones are not accepted. Added to this situation is the age-old question of the public transport system. This mode of public transport certainly does not encourage citizens to abandon the car, because the organizational gaps and inefficiencies of the public system represent a strong obstacle in terms of attraction and alternative use to private vehicles. On the sidelines, then, there is another cause that is to some extent responsible for these sad records, namely the excessive overbuilding of our territory and the consequent decrease in green areas and trees, which contributes to the worsening of air quality”.
