Verona, 29 June 2024 – Following numerous reports – about 300 contagion – concerning syndromes gastroenteric characterized by nausea, vomiting and diarrhea limited to the area of the Municipality of Torri del Benaco (Verona), which saw many users turn to the Emergency Room of the hospital in Peschiera del Garda (Verona), are underway analyses in synergy with the water manager AGS through the collection of samples at various points of the aqueduct network. At the same time, as a precaution, the mayor of Torri del Benaco, Stefano Nicotra, on the proposal of Ulss 9, has issued an ordinance that provides the ban on the use of water for drinking purposes a feedwhile awaiting the results of the tests on the samples in progress.
After the surge in reports and access to the emergency room, Health authorities have carried out tests on the faeces and some samples have revealed the presence of norovirus. A microorganism that can spread from person to person by aerosol in the air, with oral-fecal contact or through contaminated water and food. Torri del Benàco itself largely gets its supplies from the lake, fishing at a depth of 30 meters. Symptoms of norovirus, which has an incubation period of between 12 and 48 hours, include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps, with the possibility of fever. The results of the laboratory tests will arrive today but in the meantime Carlo Voi, director of Ags which manages the integrated water cycle, has declared that he has “the water supply is super loaded with chlorine as a precautionary measure to maximize the normal disinfection of the tubs”.
