LECCE – An offensive letter with insults, vulgar phrases and sexual references was delivered in recent days to the former councilor of the Municipality of Lecce Fabiana Cicirillo, 65 years old, who was part of the center-left government led by mayor Carlo Salvemini who was not re-elected in the June elections.

As far as we know, the author of the letter also made implicit references to the recent electoral campaign, inviting Cicirillo in a veiled manner to step aside. The former councilor, who formalized the complaint at the police station, had published a post on Facebook after the case of the threatening letter to the PD deputy Claudio Stefanazzi and the regional councilor Alessandro Delli Noci, two other Salento politicians of the center-left. “No one – he wrote – should be the object of such infamy and everyone, from every political latitude, should distance themselves from it and I still expect this to happen.”

The envelope containing the anonymous letter (written partly in block letters and partly in cursive) was found last Saturday by the former councilor inside the entrance to her home located in the historic center.
The other evening, the author of the letter would have waited for the former councilor to go out to walk the dog to leave the envelope, taking advantage of the open door. In the last municipal elections Fabiana Cicirillo was elected in the ranks of the center-left on the list of the mayor Lecce Città pubblica.

MAYOR POLI BORTONE ASKS FOR THE CONVOCATION OF THE ORDER AND SECURITY COMMITTEE

After learning of the letter containing insults and vulgar phrases delivered to the former councilor Fabiana Cicirillo, the mayor of Lecce Adriana Poli Bortone wrote to the prefect, Luca Rotondi, requesting the urgent convocation of the provincial committee for public order and safety. The first citizen highlights how within a few days three political exponents of the Lecce centre-left (the other two are the deputy Claudio Stefanazzi and the regional councilor Alessandro Delli Noci) were the targets of threats and messages with an intimidating content.

«My human and political culture – observes Poli Bortone – has always forced me to condemn intimidating gestures and verbal attitudes that do not fall within the sphere of a correct dialectical comparison. Which in an electoral campaign can also take on a bright tone but can never go beyond the rules of mutual respect and legality. What happened in the last few days, with threatening messages addressed to regional and local politicians, must be the subject of careful investigation to shed light on the circumstances already reported.”
For the mayor, “it is in the interest of the entire centre-right to avoid that isolated actions, already under investigation, are “relaunched” by declarations that tend to link them to the context of the electoral campaign”.
