Brindisi.Cobas: 2 July layoffs for the 76 SIR workers

The Cobas Union, faced with the confirmation of the company SIR that it wants to carry out 76 layoffs, calls two sit-ins for Monday 1 July at 9.00 am, one in front of the Prefecture of Brindisi and the other in front of the Municipality of Brindisi.

The Cobas Union is deeply irritated by the position that the SIR company continued to maintain during the meeting held today, Thursday 27 June, at Arpal in Brindisi in via Torpisani, during the dismissal procedure for 76 workers employed until yesterday in the coal unloading contract.

Sir reiterated that it wants to proceed with layoffs starting from July 2nd, cancelling any possibility of redundancy payments.

The serious provocation of the SIR arose from the refusal of the trade unions to the company proposal that in the event of recourse to the redundancy fund, the workers should pay the costs of the same through the cancellation of second level agreements.

After this very serious confirmation, Cobas immediately took action by turning to the Honorable Mauro D’Attis who immediately made use of his skills.

Cobas also made a heartfelt appeal to the Prefect of Brindisi, Luigi Carnevale, for a new meeting to update him on the situation which has become dramatic; together with the request for another new meeting in Bari at the Regional Task Force on Employment in the presence of Enel and SIR, the same subjects of the last meeting where commitments were made by SIR for the use of the redundancy fund.

But the date of the meeting, scheduled for July 11, was denied by SIR, deeming it too far away in time.

A similar appeal by Cobas was addressed to the Mayor of Brindisi, Pino Marchionna, who was charged by the National Government with the reindustrialization plan for Brindisi.

The facts: the law on social safety nets provides that in the event of cessation of activity there may be a year of redundancy pay.

The SIR during a meeting at the Regional Task Force on Employment, led by President Leo Caroli, had accepted the use of the one-year redundancy fund.

This would have allowed us to have time to try to obtain the alternative investments promised by Enel, which at a certain point disappeared, and by other investors.

In a brazen and incredible way, SIR is asking the trade unions that the workers who will remain in their jobs must give up what they have obtained with second-level agreements over the years, starting with meal vouchers and more.

In response to the negative response from all the workers, SIR states that it does not intend to cover the costs, which are minimal for those who earned a lot with Enel, for the redundancy fund and that it therefore intends to continue on the path of layoffs.

The Cobas union is ready to reject the provocations of ENEL and SIR and to raise barricades to defend all the workers of the Cerano power plant.
