GAIA SpA’s work continues for the “doubling of the purifier” of Viareggio: the maxi revamping project and of plant expansion It provides for a total investment equal to 9 million euroswith the aim of enabling the infrastructure to handle, with extreme flexibility, even the peaks of “extra work” arriving in the summer period, due to the influx of tourists. The progress of the work is clearly visible from the construction of the new works, between recently built reinforced concrete structures and new equipment, which will constitute the new purifier line, to strengthen and support the existing one. The area on which the new line stands is adjacent to the historic purifier and is located on an area of approximately 30,000 square meters. All works will be completed by the end of 2024.
The plant of the future will be able to effectively treat loads, also to protect bathing water, and to work in an increasingly sustainable manner. The intervention carried out by GAIA looks at alloptimization of processes, including the strengthening of disinfection, but also the reduction of bad odors, the containment of energy consumption, the reduction of maintenance costs.

The Viareggio purifier is located in a rural area and is less than 3 km from the sea. The plant serves a sewerage network with a total length of approximately 156 km
The Municipality of Viareggio is an important tourist destination which, during the summer season, sees a significant increase in its inhabitants. This also involves a considerable increase in the flow rate and loads entering the purification plant. In fact, it is estimated that, compared to the approximately 62,000 inhabitants resident during the year, in summer the population served by the Viareggio purifier reaches 90,000 inhabitants.

Among the main interventions underway: The strengthening of preliminary treatments and centralization of the same in a single structure within the new plant area; the creation of 1 new line consisting of 1 anoxic selector, 1 alternating cycle tank and 1 sedimentation tank; the construction of tertiary treatments through the adoption of disc filters; the creation of an additional disinfection tank, in which to provide for the installation of a UV ray sterilization system immediately downstream of the filters and an auxiliary disinfection treatment with peracetic acid, whose storage and dosing system will be placed under suitable coverage . Furthermore: the creation of a biofilter for the treatment of odorous emissions; the use of the accumulation tank of the biological compartment of the MBR line as a denitrification tank and the adaptation of the existing cycle tank in order to make the most of the potential of the ultrafiltration compartment. In addition to everything, the plant, structural and electrical components will also be updated.
The work carried out by GAIA on the Viareggio purifier is integrated with all the works to lay new sewers in the area, where they are still missing, for over 10 km of the network.
