In Barletta the Tari rates will remain unchanged. Yesterday in the city council the resolution which established the increase in the waste tax by 1 million 200 thousand euros was unanimously rejected as envisaged by the adjustment of the cost of waste management to the inflation index. A tough battle had taken place on the topic between the majority and the opposition with press releases and interventions on social media. Until ten days ago the administration seemed oriented towards approving the Tari increase, then Mayor Cannito’s decision to reverse and find the resources to avoid any burden on taxpayers’ pockets. A choice on which political considerations also weighed: it was difficult for Cannito to find the numbers in the city council to decide on the increase in the waste tax, pressured by the discontent of several members of his majority. Furthermore, he would have further exposed himself to attacks from PD and Forza Italia, who in recent days have repeatedly requested and proposed alternative solutions to a clearly unpopular measure. Despite the final convergence, there was no shortage of back and forth between the majority and the opposition in the chamber. The centre-right pointed the finger at the Region’s inability to close the waste cycle, resulting in a surge in landfill disposal costs. The Democratic Party and the Civic Coalition accuse the administration of not having been able to maintain a high level of separate waste collection. Cannito lashes out against Ager, the regional waste agency. “It is only by ignoring its instructions and deciding independently in which plants to deliver the waste – admits the mayor – that the Municipality has been able to save 500 thousand euros, resources that together with others coming from the profits of Barsa, from the organization of the Disfida and from the Sport sector, will allow not to increase the cost of the Tari. Cannito fuels the suspicion that the Region favors some Municipalities and penalizes others.

Not only Tari was discussed during yesterday’s city council meeting. The granting of honorary citizenship to the Carabinieri has been decided. Measure passed unanimously by those present with the exception of city councilor Trimigno, who left the session shortly before the vote and then returned to the chamber a few minutes later.
