A 21-year-old worker died while working in a warehouse of a construction company that produces concrete products in Canicattì, in the Agrigento area.
According to an initial reconstruction, he was struck by a forklift he was operating. The Fire Brigade, Carabinieri and 118 personnel intervened on site.
The Agrigento Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation.
Another worker, however, fell from an overpass on the A4 into the Adda River and is currently missing.
A phenomenon, that of deaths at work, which kills more than the mafia, as highlighted by a Uil study presented this morning.
In fact, between 1983 and 2018, the murders attributable to organized crime – according to the Istat archive – were 6,681, in the same period the deaths at work – Inail source – were over 55,000, like “a silent massacre”.
“In the last 10 years – we read in the study – the average has been almost 1,200 victims per year. According to the latest data published by Inail, in 2023 alone, compared to 585,356 total complaints, 1041 involved fatal accidents”. In the first 3 months of 2024 alone, 145,130 injury reports have already been submitted (+0.38% compared to the first quarter of 2023) and 191 deaths have already been recorded.
91.7% of fatal cases involved men. Almost half of the cases involved the 50-64 age group of workers.”
As for accidents, in 2023 the incidence increased in the under-20 workers group, with an increase of 11.7%: from 73,862 to 82,493 cases. “The incidence of fatal cases involving foreigners is high – it continues – (over 65% of fatal accidents that occurred at work in 2023), obviously considering only regular workers”.
