«Playing in Puglia is now a tradition». The passion of Alex Britt for this land it is evident. The Roman singer-songwriter is ready to enchant the Apulian public with two highly anticipated concerts: in Galatina on 30 June and in Barletta on 14 July. Two concerts that are part of the program of the Oversound Music Festival, which in the summer months will bring many protagonists of the Italian music scene to Puglia.
Guitar and unmistakable voice, Britti will bring to the stage an irresistible mix of blues, pop and electronic experimentation. From the early successes, “Oggi sono io” and “7000 caffè”, up to the most recent songs, for two evenings that promise to be unforgettable.
Alex Britti, your music has always been a fusion of different genres. How has your musical style evolved over the years and what are your main current influences?
«I am an omnivorous listener. So by eating everything, I am myself a little bit of everything. The blues is my starting point, the one I have never abandoned. And then there’s the new part. I’ve always been a bit of a blues Taliban. If we talk about the guitar, it’s true, I’m a “bear” and I don’t move an inch, not so much on the way I play it, but on the guitar as an object. Over the years, playing has transformed, but I prefer old-fashioned amplifiers with knobs. In the same way, however, I am open to new things: I try to study the most interesting things, but always in my own way. I always want to look for new melodies. I try to select the ones I prefer, to have a more exclusive, more personal and recognizable language. On the arrangements, then, there is all the necessary technology. Already in ’98 with my first album, I was one of the first to combine electronics with the classic sound of instruments. I like to experiment.”
With such a full calendar in the summer, do you manage to carve out time for vacation?
“I like to leave things to chance, but as they say, ‘fortune favors the bold, but you have to buy the lottery ticket.’ So since I travel all summer for work, when I find places where I like to stay, I stop for a few days. After the Galatina concert, I’ll spend some time with my son in Puglia, just sea, relaxation and good food.”
What is it like to play in Puglia?
«Playing in Puglia is now a tradition. For many years I have been doing at least two or three concerts there. I was in Molfetta for Battiti Live, then in San Severo. And now to Galatina and Barletta. I always come back very willingly because it is an area that I appreciate and I like to stop by even when I don’t have to work, carving out a few days before or after the concerts. Everyone knows the sea, but there are also inland towns where you can eat well and spend beautiful days. This land is fantastic, playing here is always a pleasure, also because after the concert I always go to visit some friends who make me eat like God.”
Favorite dish?
«I have blues tastes, so for example I like broad beans with chicory, the good ones. I’m really freaking out (smiles, ed.). Then, obviously the raw fish. One thing I eat in industrial quantities are the students, who are neither in Rome nor in Milan. I could even eat a whole bucket of them! And then the mussels, the ones from Taranto, which are only found here.”
Did you already know Barletta and Galatina?
Yes, I have already played several times in Barletta. The castle moat, in addition to being a suggestive place, has really cool acoustics. It’s like being indoors but outdoors. From the stage the sounds are louder and more booming, so I like playing there. I know Galatina from the stories of a friend. I had a drummer from Galatina with me who always talked about this city, but I don’t think I’ve ever been there. I’ll find out.”
How would you describe the Apulian fans?
“It depends. It’s a changing audience, in summer it’s a different story than in winter. When you play in summer there are a lot of tourists, so you play in Puglia but you have people from all over Italy in front of you. When you play in winter instead you have the real Puglian in front of you. And that’s a “caciarone” audience, in the good sense, an audience that makes noise, participates and likes to have fun.”
