The third linear accelerator for increasingly targeted oncological treatments has been installed at the San Gerardo dei Tintori in Monza.

High precision of treatments and reduction of side effects: the entry into operation of the third linear accelerator, acquired with funding from the PNRR, will ensure a better quality of oncological care at the IRCCS San Gerardo dei Tintori Foundation.
Thanks to the installation of latest generation technologies such as the SGRT (Surface Guided Radiation Therapy) system – the new linear accelerator, in addition to being able to direct the radiation beam with millimetric precision, is able to check the correct positioning of the patient and tumor target throughout treatment delivery.

The new machine allows the patient’s body surface to be reconstructed in real time and in high resolution, making “4D” radiotherapy possible which takes into account the time factor for the organs that tend to move together with breathing (such as breasts, lungs, liver, pancreas and kidneys), synchronizing the delivery of the daily dose with the phases of breathing.
Today, all radiotherapy procedures performed at the Fondazione IRCCS San Gerardo dei Tintori use advanced technologies that allow for the extremely precise identification of the neoplastic target and the sparing of surrounding healthy organs, preserving their functionality, thus offering each patient an optimal approach in relation to the type of tumor, its location and extension.
During each application the radiotherapy treatment is directed and dosed in a personalized manner thanks to the work of a specialized team of doctors, physicists, technicians and nurses. Tumors located anywhere in the body are affected more effectively, without penalizing the functionality of other healthy vital organs, often very close to the disease to be treated.

“The same dosimetric calibration that makes the three linear accelerators “twin” machines – explains Dr. Elena De Ponti, director of the Complex Operational Unit of Health Physics – will allow us to avoid suspensions of treatments in the event of machine downtime for maintenance or breakdown , ensuring greater therapeutic continuity for the benefit of patients.”
“The new linear accelerator equipped with the most advanced patient control and monitoring systems – underlines Prof. Stefano Arcangeli, director of the Complex Operating Unit of Radiotherapy of the IRCCS San Gerardo dei Tintori Foundation and Director of the School of Specialization in Radiotherapy of the University of Milan-Bicocca – is part of a project for a large-scale redevelopment of the Radiotherapy of San Gerardo, one of the few public centers in Lombardy to have completely renovated its equipment in the last five years, making available to the territory a technological offer of high quality that will contribute to increasing the possibility of healing and treatment for our patients”.
