The university campus will not be built in Pentima. The premises, renovated by the Region, will have another destination, it has not yet been decided which one, but it is certain that they will not host the student residence. The project for the “architectural and functional redevelopment of the premises in lower Pentima” to be used as student accommodation has been definitively cancelled. A decisive change of direction compared to the idea of the polycentric university, located in the urban suburbs, dating back to the early 2000s. «There must be no confusion between Pentima locality and Pentima university, the funds with which the structure was renovated were not for the university, but for the buildings located in that area. And now, in agreement with the Region, we have decided to find another location for student accommodation, confining them to Pentima would have been punitive, if students want to go out in the evening they have no connections, they are outside the city, even going on foot is difficult . Of course, public transport could be encouraged, but it’s not easy”, explains Viviana Altamura, councilor for university and research in the municipality of Terni. The idea is to bring the university to the city center. But then where will the student body for the Terni university be located? The Municipality has scheduled a meeting with Ater, local companies for residential construction and Adisu, agency for the right to education, during which it put forward the proposal to create a widespread student residence, i.e. to put the small structures back on track abandoned for more than fifteen years, which are located in the city, owned by Ater and transform them into mini accommodation for students. There is Ater’s approval, Adisu has asked for time to evaluate the hypothesis. There is also news for the announcement of the university canteen, after the unsuccessful tenders it was decided to include a new possibility: whoever takes over the management of the canteen will be able to organize a cooking center in the same premises in which to prepare not only meals for the university canteen, but also others which will then be distributed to different locations. It will be possible to prepare pre-cooked meals that arrive, for example, in some school canteens. Another change concerns the rent that the University will have to pay to the municipality for the use of the San Valentino premises. Until now that structure had been granted on free loan for use, the Perugian university only paid for the utilities. «The desire to strengthen the university in Terni is fine, but the taxes paid by students enrolled in Terni faculties end up in the coffers of the Perugian university and why not also ask for a small rent?» stigmatizes councilor Altamura. Meanwhile, while we are discussing whether or not to make the university pay the rent, it turned out that the free loan contract stipulated by the municipality of Terni and the university has expired fifteen years ago and has not been renewed since 2009. Contract new new life?
