Asti – Immigrants treated like slaves in a poultry farm in the province of Asti: recruited in groups of four outside the prefecture’s reception center, they were paid 20 euros (five euros each) for each truck they managed to fill with animals. And these chickens then went to renowned companies present in large-scale retail trade. The Financial Police is now investigating gangmastering and exploitation of illegal immigration.

The matter came to light at the end of 2022, after four Bangladeshi migrants, all waiting for a residence permit, guests at the Reception and Services Center (Cas) in Castello di Annone (AT), decided to turn to the CGIL. The employer, in fact, had refused to pay them the agreed sum. With their testimony (reported by the newspaper Repubblica), they explain that every day, at three in the morning, “an Egyptian employee of the plant passes in front of the CAS with his car and transports four guests to the farm” to carry out the tasks of “suppression and slaughter of chickens with the subsequent loading of trucks for transport to customers”. On August 10, 2023, Flai Cgil of Asti filed a complaint.

As anticipated, these workers were paid about five euros per person for each filled truckand upon reaching the third truck, an additional fee of 10 euros was added. The working hours were from three to ten in the morning. Each vehicle had a capacity of about 1,500 animals; after filling them, it was necessary to manage the carcasses of the discarded animals, to be taken for disposal with another truck. In all this, the workers were not even provided with masks and boots.
