Forlì, flooding in Barisano: the canal is to blame

Wednesday’s rains created flooding in the city and also in the suburbs. If in the historic center the “blame” was attributed to the sewage system, in Barisano the finger is pointed at the canal that runs alongside the road and which, loaded with cut but not collected grass, debris, branches, holes created by nutria and mice, would have caused the water to flow beyond the embankment. On Wednesday evening the canal broke its banks, invading fields and even parts of the inhabited areas. Direct witness is Mirco Guardigli, owner of “Molino Ricci & Guardigli” in via Voltuzza, a family-run company that has been in the market for thirty years. «The problem arises from the fact that when grass and reeds are cut on rivals, instead of being taken away or left on the banks, they are cut on the bank and the material remains there. When the flood arrived, grass, arella, trunks, reeds, large branches blocked our sluice which generally has no problems accepting a lot of water but all this mass blocked it. The level rose, after which the side facing the road began to give way, moving the embankment a little, and the water flowed back into the canal. However, on the opposite side where there were large nutria holes, it gave way and we were flooded. I have the feed, cereal and pesticide company. In the end the water was channeled towards the fields, then into a conduit, I had some damage to the fertilizers, but in the end it was better that way because if it had broken on the opposite side it would have flooded four or five houses in the lower part. Our kitchen got a little wet.”
