Avellino, dead crushed by an iron table: funeral of little Domenico tomorrow

Montemarano, province of Avellino, is shocked by the tragic death of Domenico Galluccio, a seven-year-old boy, crushed by a heavy iron table in his home garden. Domenico was waiting for his parents, Vincenzo and Anna, to go together to the fair of the patron saints Giovanni and Paolo in the nearby hamlet, when the tragic accident occurred.

The tragedy occurred around 8pm last night. According to the first reconstructions by the carabinieri, the child was playing in the courtyard of the house when an iron table, probably placed upright and leaning against the wall, suddenly fell and overwhelmed him. Domenico was hit in the head and died instantly, without the possibility of being rescued.

The magistrate on duty at the Avellino Public Prosecutor’s Office, after an external expert opinion carried out by the coroner, has decided not to order an autopsy or to transfer the body to the hospital. The child’s funeral will be held tomorrow at ten o’clock in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Piazza del Popolo. For the occasion, a day of mourning has been declared.

The community of Montemarano, known for its prized Aglianico grape and its historic carnival, rallied around the Galluccio family. The funeral chapel, set up on the first floor of the house in the rural hamlet of Macchia del Monte, was visited by a continuous flow of relatives, friends and fellow citizens, all deeply moved.

Domenico attended the second year of primary school at the Montemarano branch of the “A. Di Meo” of Volturara. Teachers and classmates were shocked by the news. “A tragedy that leaves us speechless and throws us into a state of deep pain”declared Beniamino Palmieri, mayor of Montemarano, a community of just over 2,500 inhabitants. “We have a duty to mourn this child who passed away so soon and to rally around his family: this mourning is for our entire community.”
