The National Coordination of Teachers of the discipline of Human Rights proposes the story of a determined, scrupulous and charismatic man, so much so as to earn not only the antipathy of his opponents, but also, paradoxically, the esteem: Mario Diana. From a farmer first to a small businessman in the transport sector, he never failed to follow his principles and was eliminated by a group of killers from the Casalese Camorra composed of Antonio Iovine, Giuseppe Quadrano (Don Peppe Diana’s killer) and Dario De Simone, on the 26th June 1985 in the square of Casapesenna, in front of the entrance to the “Bar Oreste”. Today there remains a profound echo of his stubbornly proud and dignified personality in the re-enactment of his story elaborated by the student Stefano Raimondo of class III section. C of the Filolao scientific high school in Crotone

Mario Diana died at the age of 49. Mario began his career as a farmer, following family traditions. But he decided to move on to the industry, demonstrating rigor and honesty which earned him a lot of respect and trust.

Despite the threat of the Camorra in his homeland, Mario has always refused any contact with them. This steadfastness and integrity of his, however, ultimately cost him his life. The culprits confessed that the Camorra could not tolerate its independence.

Dario De Simone, one of the leaders of the Camorra and perpetrator of the crime, even recognized Mario’s nobility, calling him “a respectable person” during his confession and also stated that Mario was eliminated precisely because his integrity represented a threat to the Camorra.

Mario Diana’s example will remain etched in the memories of all those who appreciate honesty and courage. His story will continue to inspire anyone who fights for a more just and honest society, offering hope and strength to face the challenges of the future.

Surely the adamantine clarity of an integral conduct, that of Mario, free from any compromise or ambiguity can only constitute a reference model for those who aspire to a society free from injustice and violence and projected towards a finally flourishing future for all, as crime not only enriches a few colluders, but, even more dramatically, it thrives in socio-economic fabrics that are severely in crisis. Awareness of one’s rights/duties can become a tool for redemption and rebirth for the community.

The National Coordination of Teachers of the discipline of Human Rights notes how the project “#ourstudentsnarratethemartyrsoflegality” is spreading among the young generations faces, stories and episodes that are truly extraordinary for their educational value.
