Safe space for victims of gender violence

A protected environment for victims of gender violence was inaugurated at the Matera Police Headquarters, thanks to the collaboration with the Soroptimist International Club of Matera.

Today in Matera ‘A room of one’s own’ was inaugurated inside the Police Headquarters, a protected and welcoming environment intended for victims of gender violence. The initiative is the result of collaboration between the Soroptimist International Club of Matera and the local police station. The inauguration ceremony saw the participation of the commissioner Emma Ivagnes and the president of the club, Patrizia Minardi, as well as various representatives of local institutions.

The room, designed to offer a safe and comfortable place, has been furnished in a simple but welcoming way, with a heart-shaped work created by the artist Margherita Serra. The objective is to facilitate a less traumatic approach for victims during the interaction with the State Police operators who deal with the reconstruction of the abuse suffered.

On the occasion of the inauguration, Soroptimist donated some copies of the book “A Room of One’s Own” by Virginia Woolf, whose title inspired the project that led to the opening of similar spaces in various cities for listening to victims of gender violence.
