The Belle Époque Lives Again Between Art and History. Four Works from the Bistolfi Civic Museum and Plaster Cast Gallery of Casale Monferrato Exhibited at Palazzo Cucchiari. Curated by Alessandria today

Casale Monferrato, a city rich in history and culture, shines once again in the Italian artistic panorama thanks to the participation of four works from its Civic Museum and Bistolfi Plaster Cast Gallery in the prestigious “Belle Époque. The Italian painters of modern life. From Lega and Fattori to Boldini and De Nittis to Nomellini and Balla”, hosted from 29 June to 27 October 2024 at Palazzo Cucchiari in Carrara, headquarters of the Giorgio Conti Foundation.

A Prestigious Cultural Loan

This exceptional occasion features three works by Leonardo Bistolfi and one by Paolo Troubetzkoy. Bistolfi’s works, part of the recent “Donazione Martelli Bistolfi 2021-2023”, include “Lady with a parasol” and “Il Profumo”, both restored for the event thanks to the contribution of the Conti Foundation, and the “Portrait of a woman ”, already restored in 2023 with the support of Soroptimist International of Casale Monferrato. These works, exhibited for the first time outside of Casale Monferrato, offer a rare opportunity to appreciate Bistolfi’s artistic genius in a different context.

The “Portrait of a Lady with a Plumed Hat” by Paolo Troubetzkoy, however, comes from the private collection of the Casalese master and was donated to the Civic Museum by Andrea Bistolfi at the beginning of the 2000s. This sculpture, displayed in the museum’s 19th century room, represents an elegant example of Troubetzkoy’s sculptural art.

A Journey into Post-Unification Italian Art

Curated by Massimo Bertozzi, the exhibition is divided into seven sections that explore the evolution of Italian art after the Unification of Italy, illustrating how painting has transcended regional schools to form a contemporary national identity. The exhibition highlights the emerging role of high finance, entrepreneurship and aristocracy in promoting the fine arts, alongside and sometimes replacing traditional academies.

An Exhibition of Masterpieces

Among the approximately ninety works on display, we find paintings on canvas and wood, watercolours, pastels and sculptures in bronze and plaster. The exhibition covers a time span from 1864 to 1917, presenting works by prominent artists such as Fattori, Lega, Boldini, De Nittis, Nomellini and Balla, as well as other significant ones such as Signorini, Spadini, Pellizza da Volpedo, Zandomeneghi, Corcos, Mancini , Cremona, Bianchi, Longoni, Morbelli and Previati.

An event not to be missed

The participation of the works of the Bistolfi Civic Museum and Plaster Cast Gallery of Casale Monferrato in the Palazzo Cucchiari exhibition represents not only an important recognition for the Casale artistic heritage, but also an opportunity to promote the rich cultural heritage of the city. Art enthusiasts and the curious will have the opportunity to admire these masterpieces in a context that celebrates the Belle Époque and the creative fervor of post-unification Italy.
