Index.hua Hungarian site, reports that the Budapest regional court has contacted the presidency of the European Parliament, for request the waiver of immunity parliamentarian. The process initiated by the Hungarian authority falls within its powers and a specific commission, convened for the occasion, will have to evaluate whether the conditions exist for the court’s request to materialize.
Salis herself intervened on the issue during her first press briefing in Brussels: “My intention it’s not to take away from me to a criminal proceeding, is to be tried in accordance with justice, that is, in compliance with fundamental rights, according to a fair trial, with equal treatment before the law and in compliance with the principle of proportionality“. A process which, however, is now suspended precisely in the name of the immunity obtained. “The decision on the revocation will be up to the European Parliament which will decide through a vote. I sincerely hope and expect that Europe, the European Parliament, will take sides in defense of fundamental rights, in defense of presumption of innocencethe principle of proportionality and respect for the rule of law“, he concluded. A principle of innocence that if immunity is not revoked will remain such for at least the next five years, without the possibility of definitively ascertaining that innocence, or the opposite.
In Budapest, Salis is under investigation for attempted murder and has already served time 15 months in preventive prison in a prison in the capital. Thanks to the election from the ranks of Avs, the party of Fratoianni and Angelo Bonelli, he obtained a European seat and with it freedom, return to Italy and immunity. The Hungarian site does not report its sources and for the moment no one from the European Parliament has confirmed the indiscretion. Some sources reached by the agency Adnkronos they explain that at present no requests of this type have been received by the parliament offices but “it’s not unlikely” which may arrive soon. In fact, this type of procedure must follow a very particular process, with numerous intermediate steps, which in most cases slows down its transmission.
The decision had already been somehow announced by the Chief of Staff of the Hungarian government: “The competent Hungarian authority should ask the European Parliament to waive immunity“. A suggestion that seems to have been listened to. The court will have to demonstrate to parliament the reasons why it believes that the trial should continue immediately and bring evidence of Ilaria Salis’ guilt, to convince at least half plus one of parliament to vote in favor of the revocation. In that case, the trial would continue and in the event of conviction the teacher could end up in prison again. On the other hand, it was never hidden that the final objective of Salis’ candidacy was precisely to grant her immunity: there is no merit, no other reason to nominate a person with two final convictions in Italy as a candidate for the Brussels parliament.
And what Salis has declared in recent days seems to justify those who have never considered it adequate represent Italians in the highest European institution. Salis, by his own admission, does not intend to change: he will always be the exponent of the social centers who in the past threw rubbish at policemen, participated in clashes with the police and who was found inside an occupied apartment.
In Brussels he said he will bring the voice of the social centres, which he will continue to frequent. Now it remains to be seen how the Budapest court intends to move to assert his rights. In the meantime, Salis will soon be elected to parliament for the first time.
