There street which connects San Pantaleo at Olbia-Arzachena has become one waste dump open sky. You can really find anything in the gutters: in addition to conventional garbage bags and plastic waste, they are there mattresses, tires, suitcases. The list also includes old radios, telephones and computers. There’s even a device for health and beauty. The phenomenon is nothing new and, perhaps because it is a provincial road with little traffic, some citizens feel more comfortable disposing of their waste there. However, for the people who regularly pass through it the situation is exasperating and shameful. Some inhabitants of the area, about a month agocomplained about a similar state of affairs, which, in the meantime, is got worse.

Fighting waste abandonment in Olbia

The abandonment of wasteUnfortunately, it is a phenomenon that has become very frequent everywhere. And we must ask ourselves what drives some citizens to disperse their waste into the environment, despite awareness campaigns, bans and sanctions. Personal revulsion towards separate waste collection? Lack of areas where waste of a certain type can be disposed of? Simple lack of respect towards the territory and the community? Whatever the answers, local administrations must gradually readjust their strategy to combat the phenomenon. The case of the ecobox located in five areas of Olbia. These were born with the aim of providing residents and tourists with an additional waste disposal service in addition to the regular collection days. However, over time, they themselves have transformed into piles of uncontrolled waste. This pushed the Municipality of Olbia to prepare it dismantling. Another attempt to combat the phenomenon consisted in the establishment, last March, of the figure ofmunicipal environmental inspector. Their appointment by the is awaited Mayor Nizzi.
