In the next few days, Calabria will welcome 73 new penitentiary police officers belonging to the 183rd training course, a contingent composed of 31 women and 42 men. This first allocation represents a significant reinforcement for the security of the region’s penitentiaries, deploying the new resources strategically to address the specific needs of each institution. Assignment Details:

  • Catanzaro: will receive the largest contingent with 33 new agents, including 7 women and 26 men. This assignment underlines the strategic importance of the city, home to one of the most important penitentiary institutions in the region.
  • Cosenza: It will welcome 3 agents, divided into 2 women and 1 man, thus strengthening the staff of the local structure.
  • Crotone: It will be supported by 2 new female officers, a targeted contribution to strengthen the female presence in prison staff.
  • Vibo Valentia: It will have the addition of 8 female agents, a choice that reflects the focus on greater gender balance in staff.
  • Castrovillari: Will benefit from 6 new female agents, strengthening the operational capacity of the facility.
  • Corigliano Rossano: It will see the arrival of 21 new officers, including 6 women and 15 men, a significant increase to improve the management and security of the institution.

The Senator Ernesto Rapani commented positively on this important assignment, recalling the commitment made in the previous months: «In March 2023, with Undersecretary Andrea Delmastro, we visited all the structures in the province of Cosenza to understand the conditions of the structure and the staff. On that date, the commitment was made that by the end of 2023 a director would be appointed and at the end of the agents’ course the staff would be assigned. So it was done, commitment kept.”

The arrival of the new agents is part of a context of growing challenges for the Calabrian penitentiary system, which requires adequate personnel to ensure safety, order and respect for the rights of prisoners. The strengthening of the contingent will improve the working conditions of the agents already in service, reducing workloads and increasing the capacity to manage emergencies. The presence of new agents, trained and motivated, also represents an opportunity to bring new energy and skills into the penitentiary police force, contributing to the continuous improvement of detention conditions and the work of the operators.
