Act of vandalism on the irrigation pipeline of the Allaro system in the Municipality of Caulonia

With great regret and concern I report a serious and ugly episode of vandalism, gratuitous and deplorable, which occurred on the irrigation pipeline of the Allaro system in the Municipality of Caulonia (RC) managed by the Calabria Reclamation Consortium for which I express strong disappointment. This is what the Commissioner of the Calabria Reclamation Consortium, Giacomo Giovinazzo, states and denounces.

The author (or authors), explains, closed the sluice gate of the pipeline and therefore the water that was supposed to feed the plant and its passage flowed into the riverbed.

The Consortium employees who promptly went to the site, he adds, noticed that the “steering wheel” had been tampered with and the chain and padlock that blocked its operation had been torn away.

He immediately informed the Consortium that he proceeded to file a complaint against unknown persons at the Caulonia Carabinieri Station.

An unworthy act, comments the commissioner, which strikes at the heart of the farmers and the activity of the consortium which is working daily to guarantee water for the irrigation of crops.

Prevention, maintenance, investments and management of water resources are the key words of the Reclamation Consortium which, I say with extreme clarity, will not remain passive in the face of this and other unfortunate episodes that may occur.

Indeed, controls will immediately be intensified with appropriate acts and initiatives in this as well as in other territories to uncover abuses and prosecute them in the appropriate places as well as to ensure that the authors of this despicable action are prosecuted in the competent places.

It is not possible, he concludes, that a public good serving farmers should be vandalized.

The Extraordinary Commissioner

Dr. Giacomo Giovinazzo
