24 hours after the election as mayor of Potenza, Vincenzo Telesca chooses “Oltre il Giardino”, the Cronache TV program hosted by Paride Leporace broadcast on digital terrestrial channel 68, for his first public interview. A landslide victory over the centre-right candidate Francesco Fanelli. A triumph that was clearly evident from the results of the first seats counted. «I didn’t expect such a large gap – said Telesca -. However, I always thought that victory was within reach. You could feel it from the meetings in the neighborhoods and from the warmth of the citizens.” The city strongly wanted the change and analyzing the data more specifically there are sections in which Telesca achieved 90% of the consensus. An extraordinary result. «There are many sections in which the advantage was very large – commented the new mayor of the Lucanian capital – and Avigliano Scalo and Lavangone are the districts of Potenza that are very dear to me. An entire community that has always been very close to me, since 2014.” Francesco Fanelli loses around 5 thousand votes, Telesca recovers 7 thousand compared to the first round, a figure achieved also thanks to the programmatic agreement with the mayoral candidates, later elected to the City Council, Pierluigi Smaldone and Francesco Giuzio. Vincenzo Telesca, however, has “built” his candidacy for mayor over the years, as he himself tells Leporace: «In 2019 it was the mayor Dario De Luca who spoke to me about a possible candidacy to continue the path he had started. The idea, still in its infancy, started at that moment and since then I have started working step by step, together with the others and from the opposition benches, also trying to reconstruct the city’s political data which had fallen apart a lot. It wasn’t easy and it wasn’t easy to rebuild it, we also arrived at these elections with quite evident fractures. This victory makes it clear that only with the unity of the centre-left, of the progressive and reformist sphere can we be a competitor of a right that always presents itself as cohesive.” «We must start again from this data – continued Telesca -. I believe that the agreement with the other progressive forces is truly a political laboratory that starts from Potenza but that it can also be replicated in the next municipal elections in the countries that will vote and that it can also be replicated in the next regional elections. We must start again from this union that has been created, with the differences that always exist. The important thing is to be united.” As regards the formation of the municipal council, Telesca does not say too much: «Giuzio and Smaldone will be part of the team». For the appointments, it will be necessary to “maintain a political balance and give concreteness to administrative action: it will be necessary to get to work immediately to give concrete answers to citizens on the many critical issues of the city”.
