Countdown for the vintage boats ready to compete in the Serenissima on the occasion of the eleventh edition of the Principality of Monaco Trophy for Vintage Sails in the Lagoon Cup BNL BNP Paribas Wealth Management, Aon Special Award. The event, promoted by Anna Licia BalzanHonorary Consul of the Principality of Monaco in Venice, plans for sSaturday 29th and Sunday 30th June two regattas in the waters in front of the Lido of Venice while on Sunday morning around 11am, before the start of the second race, the boats will parade for the traditional sailing in the San Marco Basin visible to the public along the banks. This year the show offered to citizens and visitors will be particularly evocative: the fleet of historic sails will be joined by around 50 Riva motorboats for the annual Riva Days gathering organized by the Riva Historical Society and the 5.5 m Tonnage Internazionale engaged in a series of regattas from Friday to Sunday to win the Enoshima Trophy, dedicated exclusively to this metric class which has been sailing the seas around the world for over seventy years.

Among the boats registered in the ‘Vintage Yachts’ category (built before 1950), the 1936 Serenity by the Venetian Roberto Dal Tio and the 1944 Ciao Pais will be the boats to beat, while among the ‘Classic Yachts’, built between 1950 and 1975, the absolute protagonists are often the sixty-year-old Nembo II by Nicolò De Manzini, president and standard-bearer of the Yacht Club Adriaco of Trieste and the 1973 Naïf by Ivan Gardini representing the Circolo Velico Ravennate. The 1980 Camilla and the 1960 Return will instead represent the Venturieri di Chioggia, the well-known association for the diffusion of sailing founded in 1988. Return, in particular, is the 100th Vertue, a historic project by the Englishman Laurent Giles. Morwenna, launched in 1914, will turn 110. Bettina 2 is a 1958 Requin, a one-design racing yacht built in Finland in 1931 based on designs by Gunnar L. Steinback.

In the 5.50 Meter International Tonnage Class there will be Violetta IV from 1957, Volpina III from 1963 and Rabicano from 1967. The latter represents the Lariana Boat Museum in Pianello del Lario, on Lake Como, the most important historical boat museum in terms of size. and typology. On board the crew is made up entirely of young female sailors under the age of 30 who this year will also participate in the category World Championship in Brittany. Violetta IV is instead a construction by the famous Baglietto shipyard in Varazze, brought back to the regatta courses throughout Italy since 2011 by the Venetian Giangiacomo Stefanon. Also by Baglietto is Volpina III, a project by Giulio Cesare Carcano, winner in the past of trophies such as the 1965 Coppa Pozzani and the Cento Miglia del Garda in her class. In Venice the 5.50 Meter SI will compete for the Enoshima Trophy, named after the Japanese island where the sailing regattas took place during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The Trophy, created in 2012, is contested every two years by applying the old Olympic rules. 2024 is a very important year for the 5.50 International Tonnage: this Class, born in London in 1949, has in fact blown out 75 candles since it was born. For five editions, between 1952 and 1968, the 5.50 were also an Olympic boat.

The regatta is organized with the sporting direction of Mirko Sguariopresident of the Venice Yacht Club and patron of other famous regattas such as the Venice Hospitality Challenge, in collaboration with the Circolo Velico PortodiMare, Venice Boat Show, Vela Spa and benefits from the patronage of Navy, Cities in celebration, and of AIVE. Italian Association of Vintage Sails. The results of the individual tests will contribute towards the awarding of the AIVE Cup of the Adriatic 2024 while the prizes for the winners will be kindly offered by the historic Murano glassworks Barovier & Toso, whose origins date back to 1295.
