New European parliamentarian Mimmo Lucano spoke on the issue of the Crotone reclamation, for which a new services conference has been scheduled for tomorrow 26 June at the request of Eni Rewind. “The story of the omitted reclamation of the SIN of Crotone is truly serious, disturbing and cannot leave anyone indifferent – declares Mimmo Lucano – During the electoral campaign, before the last European elections, I deliberately did not intervene to avoid instrumental readings that do not belong to me. On the eve of this Services Conference convened at the Ministry of the Environment, at the request of Eni Rewind, to modify the phase two Reclamation Plan approved with Ministerial Decree N°7 of 3 March 2020, with the aim of removing the constraint that requires to take hazardous special waste (poisons) out of Crotone and Calabria, I feel I must intervene to express my full support for those who are fighting to prevent poisons from being left in Crotone. It is necessary to carry out a real cleanup of the Sin on the basis of what is prescribed by the PAUR and by the services conference of 24 October 2019. I rather hope that the Services Conference of 26 June 2024 can be the opportunity to ask for an account of the failure to clean up distance of more than four years from the approval of the POB mentioned above. The institutions have the task of protecting the health of citizens and the environment in which tens of thousands of people and their families live. The citizens of Crotone have the right to live in a healthy environmental context, free from dangerous polluting elements and factors which expose them to a daily high risk of oncological diseases as demonstrated by various studies on the situation in Crotone. In this regard, I believe it is necessary to modify the Regional Waste Plan approved last March by the Regional Council of Calabria, as highlighted by the Hon. Angelo Bonelli in a specific question presented to the Minister of the Environment last May 14th. This request was also made by the regional trade union organizations and the “Poisons Out – Crotone Wants to Live” committee, rightly concerned about the spaces that the new Waste Plan opens up for devastating initiatives for Crotone and the entire Calabrian territory. These changes are necessary and urgent to protect citizens and to avoid disputes for the benefit of those who are always ready to carry out business using the spaces opened up by the new Plan adopted by the Calabria Region. Given the importance of this Plan, I will look into its contents and possibly take appropriate initiatives within the European institutions to verify their compliance and coherence with EU regulations and directives regarding waste treatment. If the necessary changes are not made in compliance with community legislation, I will not hesitate to undertake every permitted initiative, starting from a possible request to the Commission for the evaluation of an infringement procedure”.
