Waste and environment in Crotone: the Fuori i Poileni Committee meets the Prefect

A significant meeting was held today between a delegation from Poisons Out Committee Crotone Wants to Live and the Prefecture of Crotone. During the meeting, the Committee made several requests and delivered important documentation, underlining the environmental and health concerns linked to the Crotone area.

The delegation delivered the petition launched on 6 April 2024, related to the Conference of Services (CDS) of 3 May 2024, together with the signatures collected both online and in paper form. Furthermore, a note sent to the Regional Council on May 20, 2024, and a letter addressed to the President of the Calabria Region were presented. The latter, also sent for information to the Regional Council and to the Regional Councilors of the majority and opposition, requests the suspension of the effects and effectiveness of the Regional Waste Plan.

The Committee expressed concern about the serious consequences that the Regional Waste Plan could have on an area already heavily compromised and subjected to strong epidemiological health pressures. Therefore, they requested the extraordinary launch of a Strategic Environmental Assessment of the entire Crotone area.

During the meeting, the request for intervention formulated on 20 June 2024 was reiterated, in view of the CDS of 26 June 2024. The request is based on art. 3 quinquies of Legislative Decree 152/2006, which allows the Regions to adopt more restrictive protection measures in the presence of particular situations in the territory. The Committee also requested state intervention, addressing the Prefecture pursuant to art. 309 of Legislative Decree 152/2006, in the event of damage or threat of environmental damage.

The Committee expressed gratitude to the Prefect and the Prefecture for the continuous and vigilant control carried out on the territory. This thanks – we learn from a released press release – was particularly heartfelt in light of the worrying declarations of some institutional bodies, which would insinuate the suspicion that Crotone is already an uncontrolled destination for special and dangerous waste.
