Seven new CNSAS mountain rescue technicians

Training activities which saw CNSAS technicians on the front line took place in recent days. Seven new mountain rescue technicians have joined the V Delegation from Brescia after participating in various activities on ice and mixed terrain. Of these seven, one is part of the Ponte di Legno Stationone of Middle Valleytwo of the Breno station, three of Valsabbia. The module, which lasted three days, took place on the Forni Glacier, above Santa Caterina Valfurva, in the province of Sondrio.

The issues at the center

Given the large amount of snow now present at high altitude in much of the Alps, it is necessary to pay maximum attention to the conditions that mountain goers will find in the coming weeks. Most of the crevasses are still hidden and knowing how to find a safe route requires great experience. The aspects covered during the training and training range from correct tying techniques to self-rescue systems for the climbing partner, such as in the event of a fall into a crevasse. The health aspects related to hypothermia and immobilization and extrication techniques in these environments (which can be defined as confined) were discussed.

Specific equipment was also used, such as the Cevedale stand, which makes it possible to significantly facilitate the approach and recovery of the injured person by technicians and doctors: these interventions are normally carried out in collaboration with the air ambulance, to the need to transport equipment to the site and the speed of patient evacuation. However, rescuers must be specially trained to intervene even in adverse weather conditions, if intervention by helicopter is impossible. The technicians therefore experimented with the autonomous transport of this tripod – the Cevedale tripod was developed at the time by the Alpine Rescue technicians – which can be divided into several parts.

In addition to the technical aspect, that linked to progression on ice and mixed terrain was also covered: two continuous training events dedicated to this specialty, one again on the Forni Glacier, the other at the Gavia Pass, between the provinces of Brescia and Sondrio, with about twenty participants.
