Cremona also remains, albeit by a few votes, on the centre-left. The political axis of the Lombard capital cities does not move. Before the elections, the reference centers of the 12 provinces were already largely in the hands of Democratic mayors. The only exceptions are Sondrio and Pavia, center-right, and Como, governed by a civic coalition. At the end of the administrative round, the center-right loses Pavia. Widening the gap. The situation in the runoffs is more balanced: of the 12 centers with over 15,000 inhabitants at the polls, excluding Cremona, six go to the centre-left, five to the centre-right and one to a civic mayor.

Cremona – Andrew Virgil he succeeded, even if only by a small margin, and ensured the centre-left the tenth capital out of twelve. The new mayor of Cremona analyzes the first steps to be taken keeping in mind the outcome of the vote which saw him prevail by a very narrow margin, 192 votes (0.7%). Almost a draw, as his centre-right opponent defined it Alessandro Portesanthe. “I think that a relationship of confrontation with the minority is fundamental – begins Virgilio –, in the name of correctness. We have not always seen it during this electoral campaign”.

The city is divided in two by the vote and marked by abstentionism. How will you move?

“We must build points of connection with citizens, also given the strong abstention”.

Cremona is a somewhat isolated city, the doubling of the railway line will soon start which should help.

“There is a lot of work already underway on infrastructure which will soon bring the hoped-for results, especially in connections to and from Cremona. All that remains is to manage this transition. So from now on less whining and more territorial claims also towards the government, regardless of party colour.”

First goals?

“This is a city that has started important development trajectories: now we need to give ourselves new priorities, the first is to bring home the 50 million from the Pnrr, of which we have delicate lots in progress; and then there are the 2.5 million from Tamoil , (there is a large former refinery in the city, ed.) which will have to be used on environmental issues”.

Do you already have ideas and names for your council?

“There are still no names on the councillors. They will be decided after a discussion with those who supported this project, but the mayor remains autonomous”. “I recognize Andrea Virgilio’s victory – says Portesani –: I will remain available to all the people of Cremona on the opposition benches”. A tightrope vote that closed yesterday. The centre-left candidate received 13,014 votes worth 50.37%. The centre-right candidate is separated by 192 votes and with his 12,822 votes he is unable to go beyond 49.63%. A figure which, net of the first electoral round, saw Virgilio take home almost all of his votes: 13,484 against 13,014 today. For Portesani more than 1,000 fewer votes from his voters: 13,886 became 12,823.
