Vito Riggio resigns as CEO of Gesap – BlogSicilia

Vito Riggio has resigned from the position of CEO of Gesap, the management company of the “Falcone e Borsellino” airport in Palermo. The decision was formalized this morning during the meeting of the company’s Board of Directors.

“This month I turned 77 – explains Riggio –. The work has been completed and already in October I had warned the members that my role could not continue indefinitely. I remain a member of the board of directors. If we want to continue managing the ordinary administration there is no need for a former president of Civil Aviation – adds Riggio – if instead the shareholders finally want to take the path of privatization my presence would still make sense. But if the chamber of commerce has already expressed its opinion, no decision has come from the Municipality which has the majority of the shares”.

Now we are waiting for a signal from the members, from the mayor Roberto Lagalla. The Board of Directors is reconvened on Friday to temporarily assign to the new general director the signing powers for ordinary administration which until now belonged to the CEO. Today’s Board of Directors also appointed Massimo Abbate as the new general manager in place of the retired Natale Chieppa. Abbate will remain in office only for the time necessary to complete the competition for the new general manager which was started in today’s Board of Directors.

New director appointed

Massimo Abbate, director for over 15 years of the administration and finance sector of Gesap, the management company of the ‘Falcone Borsellino’ international airport in Palermo, has been appointed by the company’s board of directors as general manager, pending the selection process for the new director.
Abbate, who has been with Gesap for 37 years, a graduate in economics and business and a chartered accountant, will carry out the functions that were held by Natale Chieppa, the historic general manager, who retired a few weeks ago.
“In this transition phase – says Salvatore Burrafato, president of Gesap – a strong name was needed to give continuity to a fundamental role for the airport’s activity. Abbate’s appointment was accepted by the board unanimously, given that the manager has an important thirty-year history behind him within the company”.
