GALLARATE – From the strategic direction of the Valle Olona Asst comes the sharp response to the declarations of Angelo Benevento, director of the surgical area of the Gallarate hospital, who announced his retirement from July 1st. Professor Benevento’s position, which highlights a healthcare scenario which, for the hospitals that refer to the same Asst, is (would be) very difficult due to the lack of staff. Surgical activity would also and above all suffer. Here is the response from the top management.

We are shocked by the statements that Dr. Benevento made in a recent interview. Among these, the phrase that indicates the “health scenario close to crash” stands out.

Turnover due to retiring professionals is completely normal; ASST Valle Olona, as happens in any other local social health company, has announced competitions over the months to replace the outgoing staff and to further implement them. Among other things, the notice for the position of Head Doctor of the Gallarate Complex Structure will be released shortly.

We also underline that Dr. Benevento was already authorized by the Company to serve up to the age of 70; it was his free choice to leave in July, a choice following which the Company quickly announced the competition to replace him.

The shortage of anesthetists that Dr. Benevento talks about does not concern the Gallarate hospital. Gallarate’s surgical activity has not undergone downsizing, because the staff is there and is supported by an absolutely sufficient workforce in terms of anesthetists/resuscitators.

From this point of view, no problem arises. It is obvious that this period is characterized by inevitable changes, also considering the many upcoming retirements, however the Company’s will is to maintain an optimal level of assistance in all areas.

What is most regrettable is to note how a professional like Doctor Benevento, who played an active and important role in the current situation of the Gallarate garrison, believes he can conclude his collaboration with such a feeling of hatred.

The surgeons of the Gallarate Surgery have always had access to the operating rooms, in line with history, so the disaffection towards the Gallarate department cannot be attributed to that.

We reiterate once again that ASST Valle Olona is continuing to collaborate with the University of Milan, as always done, to host and recruit postgraduates.

The head of surgery is also leaving. Other difficulties for the Gallarate hospital
