«Our ideas silenced by Mancinelli»

ANCONA – The Roman amphitheater debuts with a double sold out for Popsophia. The city finds – finally – its beloved place in the heart of the historic center. Mayor Daniele Silvetti is delighted and with well-known fair play recognizes “the exceptional intuition of Andrea Nobili”. The lawyer and former councilor for culture of the Gramillano council who in the summer of 2011, one year after taking office, reopened the amphitheater with a series of events. Then what happened to the city government led by the former principal is well known. And darkness fell on the amphitheater for 10 years.

The assist

However, Silvetti, certainly involuntarily, threw an assist to Nobili, who now removes a few pebbles from his shoe. As for the recognition from the centre-right mayor, he returns the institutional politeness: “I thank him” he says, and takes advantage of it to launch the first dart against the previous Administration. «Even though I am an irrevocably centre-left man, I have respect for him, on a personal level, as he is capable of a kinder and more empathetic initiative than those who preceded him». He doesn’t name names, but it’s clear that the reference is to the former mayor Valeria Mancinelli who «looked for enemies where there were none, in what was a common home (the Democratic Party, ed.), to silence any discordant voices». Nobili feels he was part of that leading group of the Democratic Party “capable of thinking freely” which during the Mancinelli season “suffered unprecedented ostracism, the result of bad authoritarianism and a toxic narrative”.

The embers

The relighting of the spotlight on the Roman amphitheater has – at the same time – also rekindled an ember that had faded, but ultimately had never stopped burning. «I like to think that many of those intuitions that characterized an articulated system strategy, with which we wanted to give our city an international and contemporary dimension, are still fruitful – states Nobili -. It would be easy to point the finger at someone now, there would be many issues to highlight. Doing what they did with us, but that’s not my style. I have nothing to say to the former mayor Mancinelli and the members of his administration, it seems to me that it was the city that spoke.” Nobili has no doubts, Ancona has not changed from the point of view of political orientation.

The verdict

«A city that remains centre-left, but which wanted to express opposition to a certain way of doing things that is too divisive and arrogant» he insists. For the former councilor, however, it is not time for claims. «I only hope that the Democratic Party, in Ancona, is finally able to free itself from the toxins that have put it in difficulty in the recent past – he hopes – and knows how to question itself to inaugurate a new political season, free, broad and participatory».
