Drought in Basilicata, Andretta (Lucan Aqueduct): “We are in an emergency, appeal to users for rational use of water”

“In Basilicata the water crisis could worsen as a result of further progressive reductions in spring supplies and considering, also, the coincident and unfavorable situation of the level of the reservoirs, I appeal, immediately, to make a rational use of water resources”. This is the invitation addressed to users of Basilicata by the sole administrator of Acquedotto Lucano, Alfonso Andretta, in light of the fact that “in the region the drinking water resource supplied by primary supply schemes is progressively reducing mainly due to the modest spring contribution due to the scarce meteoric influxes”. The sole administrator of Acquedotto Lucano reports that “consumption in the inhabited areas is higher than average, also due to the improper consumption of the resource, especially in rural areas where it is often used to irrigate vegetable gardens and water gardens, sometimes also through withdrawals unauthorized.” In this regard, in recent days Andretta has advised the mayors on the need “to promote initiatives based on scrupulous use of the drinking water resource, in order to avoid serious damage to the interests of the community”. Hence the invitation to issue ordinances “forbidding the withdrawal and consumption of drinking water for irrigation and watering of vegetable gardens, gardens and lawns; washing of relevant areas, courtyards and squares; washing vehicles, machines and equipment and filling swimming pools, ornamental fountains and garden tubs. Basically all uses other than food, domestic and sanitary uses”.
