The National Coordination of Teachers of the discipline of Human Rights proposes the history of Nicolina Biscozzi, a young woman shot to death during an ambush on 22 May 1989 in Mesagne in the province of Brindisi aimed at her companion by the Holy Crown; she died a month later, on June 22, in hospital. Nicolina joins the long list of innocent “collateral” victims.

Lest the very young student forget his name Sergio Sitra of class I section. D of the Filolao scientific high school in Crotone remembers Nicolina through an accurate reconstruction of the entire affair, perfectly rendering an unsolved mystery: “Nicolina Biscozzi is one of the many mafia victims of the 1980s, most of whom are now forgotten while others even It is not known what happened to them. As in many other cases, the target was not her, but her partner, Vincenzo Carone, considered close to one of the most well-known mafia clans of Mesagne, namely that of Giuseppe Rogoli. It all began within the clan itself: when Rogoli was arrested and sent to prison, his right-hand man, Antonio Antonica, took his place, coordinating the criminal group’s every move. After a certain period, he decided to take absolute control. This caused the division of the clan into two factions: those on the Rogoli side and those on the Antonica side.

After an attack on the boss’s former right-hand man, he was hospitalized and it was here that Antonica reached the end of the line: some of Rogoli’s most loyal men headed towards the hospital and finished the man off with two gunshots. But the boss’s revenge did not end here: now he aimed to eliminate all the men aligned with Antonica and among these was Vincenzo Carone, Nicolina’s partner. On May 22, 1989, Nicolina was in the car with Vincenzo, suddenly another car pulled up next to theirs and from there they started shooting. In the shooting the young girl was seriously injured, she was immediately taken to hospital, where, after a month, she died at just 33 years old. Vincenzo’s wounds, however, were less serious and he survived, but years later he was arrested for committing various criminal acts. Nicolina’s story is similar to many others: she died due to the fault of others.”
