an uphill start for the Pesaro lifeguards

PESARO Caffè latte patches of mucilage in the sea clearly visible off shore and on the shore. Here is another inconvenience for swimmers and lifeguards dealing with seasons that are increasingly unpredictable from one year to the next. From Sottomonte to Ponente up to Baia Flaminia and below San Bartolo, there has been a mucilage “alert” for a couple of days. The phenomenon affects the entire upper Adriatic and comes from Trieste, all after the air which until Friday was truly unbreathable due to clouds of dust and sand from the Sahara. The operators: yesterday morning in Sottomonte, cleaner water offshore but on the shore the color was brown and certainly not inviting to dive, some operators commented.

The witness

«In the early hours of yesterday morning, all in all the water didn’t have that bad color but then the patches of mucilage appeared in the hottest hours – observes Alessandro Corsini of Bagni Primavera, in the last stretch of Viale Trieste – The worst day is It was Friday, the water everywhere was disgusting. It cannot be said that this summer’s start was the best, but then neither was that of 2023, when we returned to the beach after the flood, almost at the end of June. The weather and now mucilage don’t help, and compared to a summer ago we are also seeing a drop in seasonal workers, who perhaps don’t choose the full season ticket for the entire season. Periods are getting shorter especially among families, who experience more difficulties. We hope that among tourists on holiday and summer holidays, the real movement and fullness will arrive from July, and that the sea conditions will help us”. The situation is still not the best in Ponente for the port-side factories.

«There are people on the beach, after all it was a Saturday with the sun after the sand clouds – comments Marco De Biagi, Le Poste beach establishment – but for days between Sahara dust and high humidity we were penalized, for not talk about mucilage. We’ll see what happens at the start of the week, hoping that the current changes and that the forecast rain clears the air. Friday was the worst day, no one took a bath. We also lacked this if we consider the extended nourishment times, the uncertain weather and the heat that mucilage brings us. Among other things, the filaments stick to the skin with a certain force, a gentleman spent almost half an hour in the shower of the establishment”. Just two days ago, according to lifeguards from Ponente to Levante, mucilage was everywhere and had invaded almost the entire body of water in front of the concessions. «An anomalous phenomenon – explain the operators, such as Andrea Ranocchi – can in fact happen that there is a particularly hot day with a bit of algal bloom but for three days now in which from one point to another on the coast, the brown patches they resurface. Suffice it to say that on the day of the solstice and with the sea not even too calm, at 6.30 pm and almost on shore the brown stripes and spots were still visible.”
