PALERMO – Fifteen thousand took part in the Palermo Pride 2024 rainbow parade dedicated this year to the fight against gender violence, a riot of colors that animated the streets from the historic center of the Sicilian capital: from Via Roma, a place of concentration, to the cultural sites at Zisa where the evening will begin.

“It’s the most beautiful moment, it’s the moment in which we take to the streets with our anger – declared Daniela Tomasino, president of Palermo pride coordination – but also with the desire to build something new, to create relationships and beauty. At the moment Palermo is a fairly inclusive city but all of Italy is taking steps backwards.”

The streets of Palermo have become colourful, like benches and even pedestrian crossings. The parade started from Via Roma, at the intersection with Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and then wound along the main streets of the city until reaching Via Paolo Gili.

Participants marched with banners, rainbow flags and bright costumes. Music accompanied the parade along the entire route, with DJs and local artists. Many banners to promote messages of equality, respect and freedom. “this year the fight for LGBTQ+ rights is linked to the denunciation against male chauvinist and patriarchal violence”.

“I believe it is right to give space to all sensitivities, to all the identities that are part of the community – declared the mayor, Roberto Lagalla – long live Pride and long live every celebration that highlights the freedom and rights of every person. I believe that this city has a lot of respect for everyone’s rights.”

The political controversy

There was no shortage of political controversywithin the centre-right, which we described here. Edy Tamajoregional councilor of Forza Italia but above all a very recent record holder of preferences at the latest European elections, leaves no room for doubt: “Pride has no political colour, it is a fundamental moment to claim the rights of everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, identity gender or any other personal characteristic.”

“Pride is now an ideological manifestation of the left – attacks the former deputy mayor Carolina Varchi -. I guarantee to the representatives of the center-right coalition and the organizers who will participate that none of the Pride demands will ever become law, as we promised our voters when we presented ourselves for the elections”.
