Rho, here are two “new” roads from the Roman era

More than 300 to attend the visit to two Roman roads recently brought to light: “Important discovery for the history of Rho and for archaeology”

Rho – There is continuity between the most ancient history and our modernitythis is well known, but it has rarely been possible admire it directly as is happening these days in Rho. Here, thanks to an agreement between Administration, “site” archaeologists and the superintendency more than 300 citizens interested parties were able to participate in the guided tours organized to describe what was discovered under Piazza Visconti.

Rho’s past still speaks

Accompanying them in the discovery was the official of the territorial superintendency, Dr Thomas Quirino and the archaeologists of the C & V studio Stefano Cervo, Francesca Capinera And Giulia Pasquini.

Seventeenth-century and medieval remains, but above all two Roman roads and their intersection which had once almost certainly been the very heart of the city. It is no coincidence that a Visconti villa was erected in front of it, probably positioned to remain close to a center of power which, created in Roman times, was still active in medieval times.

It is rare to find important roads and crossroads, almost exceptional, so this discovery is important for the Rho area but also for archaeology. – They comment archeologists during the tour, indicating the different stratifications – We have found ceramics that testify to the existence of the road already in the imperial age, but it is likely that it was older“.

Two “new” roads from the Roman era

There are therefore two Roman roads discovered, between 8 and 10 meters wide. One, the east-west axis, has already been damaged by the placing of sewers and electrical cables over the years, and will therefore be further excavated by archaeologists. An intervention that will allow them to gain as much information as possible on the history of ancient Rho. The regeneration works of the square will therefore be completed on that stretch.

Different story for north-south direction, which runs almost parallel to the current Via De Amicis. This, being under the earth of the arboreal part of the square, is substantially intact and will remain so, underground. This will allow it to be preserved for a long time, but will keep it hidden from the eyes of citizens. Creating some structure that allows viewing, such as walkable glass, is possible, but it should be designed and financed by the municipality. However, archaeologists point out, in the long term it would risk compromising its integrity.
