Five sails for the most beautiful sea: three municipalities in Puglia and one in Basilicata

The most beautiful sea in Italy according to Legambiente and the Italian Touring Club. The Five Sails have been assigned: for Puglia there are Vieste, Gallipoli and Nardò. In Basilicata Maratea

Nardò, Vieste and Gallipoli are the three Apulian municipalities and Maratea the only Lucanian municipality awarded with the Five Sails of Legambiente and the Italian Touring Club. A total of twenty-one locations were awarded the important banner and awarded in Rome on the occasion of the presentation of the guide “The most beautiful sea 2024” edited by the environmental association and the Touring club. The guide collects tourist information and environmental characteristics of the municipalities in Cinque Vele, including the commitment to protecting caretta caretta turtles. Leading the top five for 2024 is Pollica, in the province of Salerno, with the hamlets of Acciaroli and Pioppi, in the Cilento of Campania. In second place is the municipality of Nardò, in the province of Lecce, in the Apulian district of the Alto Salento Ionico. Three sails were assigned to Nova Siri, Pisticci, Bernalda, Scanzano Jonico and Policoro (Matera) and two to Rotondella (Matera), all on the Lucanian Ionian strip.

New this year, also present in the Il Mare più bello guide, are the 33 Municipalities that are friendly to sea turtles, marked with the special “turtle” symbol and where the sails of Legambiente and the Italian Touring Club fly. From Maratea to the Tremiti islands, from San Teodoro to Gaeta passing through Silvi, Caorle and Castiglione della Pescaia, just to name a few. These are those administrations which, through a specific memorandum of understanding, have undertaken to adopt a series of measures to make the beaches welcoming also for turtles that lay their eggs as well as for bathers. “The five-sail locations that we are awarding this year – declared Stefano Ciafani, national president of Legambiente – confirm once again the great work and attention that many marine and lake realities are carrying out in the name of environmental sustainability, also light of the climate crisis that is advancing and which is having increasingly important impacts on the coast and inland areas”.
