Boar emergency, here’s what to do

The M5S councilor Marco Galante sent a note to the competent regional offices on thewild boar emergency in Puglia and in particular in province of Tarantoto understand what stage the implementation of the Regional Plan for Urgent Interventions (PRIU) after recent changes, as per national provisions, to manage and prevent the spread of African swine fever in the regional territory.
«I thank the offices – declares Galante – for the answers provided. The new Plan highlighted that of the 29 municipalities in the province of Taranto, 6 are classified as zero risk, 14 as low risk, 6 as medium risk (among which Castellaneta and Ginosa), 2 at high risk (Mottola and Laterza) and one out of range (Martina Franca) and attributed to each municipality, on the basis of the risk class, the number of wild boar heads to be depopulated as part of the selective control (10 heads for medium risk municipalities), defining the sampling objectives of the natural parks and areas protected.”

«On May 29th in the Region – says Galante – a meeting was held with the representatives of the Territorial Operational Group (GOT) of the Province of Tanto, in which it was agreed on the need to plan the actions to be undertaken, focusing on the areas considered to be at highest risk, through the direct involvement of all the bodies involved. The GOT has already installed capture systems a Castellaneta Marina And Pineta Regina of Ginosa Marina. In the response sent to me it is clarified that the procedures for killing the animals are currently underway, also with the help of Bioregulatorsin collaboration with Municipal police, Provincial and Law Enforcement, as required by national and regional provisions. This issue must be addressed with the utmost urgency. We are talking about a situation that is creating problems both from the point of view of road safety, causing iunfortunately sometimes fatal accidents, both in terms of liveability in some areas. There are more and more reports coming to me from Ginosa about the presence of these animals in the vicinity of private homes, garages and even kindergartens, which force citizens not to leave their homes and not be able to use essential services, severely limiting their personal freedom. I will continue to monitor the situation and ask for updates on the implementation of the PRIU.”
