Democratic Magistracy adheres to the demonstration called by Flai Cgil and many civil society associations for 6 July 2024 in Latina, following the death of Satnam Singha terrible and unacceptable death. The trial, according to its rules, will have to ascertain the responsibilities of individuals in that affair, but it cannot be denied that that death, the many other deaths of poor and unsafe work, the precarious lives of so many workers, both male and female, refer to collective responsibilities. It is not only the responsibility of governments, of all colors, who have not assigned to labor inspectorates sufficient resources for a minimally effective control activity, but, more radically, the responsibility of business organizations (from small to large, final terms of long supply chains) whose profits or whose very existence are based on the compression, even beyond poverty levels, of the cost of labor and therefore also of the tools (material and immaterial) to make it safe. Of the political responsibility of those who have allowed, first of all with the abolition of the principle of equal pay in contracts, the spread of the contract as a parasitic instrument, devoid of productive reasons other than the sole reduction of the cost and risks deriving from the ownership of employment relationships. Of the responsibility of those who, by not allowing, and indeed reducing, adequate legal channels of entry for foreign workers into a country that desperately needs their work, abandon so many men and women to the terrible vulnerability of the condition of irregular and therefore to exploitation or
crime. We can only react collectively to these collective responsibilities, together, as citizens of this country and this is what we do today by joining the demonstration on 6 July 2024. But we also join as magistrates and magistrates who intend
participate, with their specific knowledge, in public discourse. A commitment that is alongside that, which we well know to be a priority, in the jurisdiction, in which it is our specific responsibility to protect the fundamental rights of people, with the study – of the rules and
of the world in which they are to be applied – and with the tenacious commitment to ascertaining the facts, which is already a way of doing justice.
