A leap back in time taking Arezzo back to the Middle Ages when knights measured their value also in breathtaking games and skirmishes. With the first mortar shot exploded this morning, June 22nd, the city entered the Giostra del Saracino climate. Today marks the 145th edition of the knightly competition during which the neighborhoods of Porta del Foro, Crucifera, Santo Spirito and Sant’Andrea will compete to win the golden lance dedicated to Giorgio Vasari.
The program of the day
A special day for the city which invariably takes part in what is always a great popular celebration. Among the great protagonists of the event, in addition obviously to the eight knights, there are the participants. The armed men of the Municipality, the flag-wavers, the musicians and then the ladies and pages. Over 400 people will give their contribution to the success of the Giostra del Saracino today
The judiciary
Like any self-respecting competition, the Giostra del Saracino is governed by bodies, institutions and groups. Deus ex machina of the entire event is the Judiciary. Made up of 9 members, it is the body that deals with the election of the herald, master of the field and deputy, servants and chancellor. It is always up to the magistrates of the Joust to ensure that the knightly competition is carried out in a correct and impartial manner. This body is elected every 3 years by the Arezzo city council. For 2022-2024 the names of: Marco Cecchi (first magistrate), Laura Paffetti, Marco Salvadori, Andrea Seri, Andrea Sandroni, Mauro Messeri, Angiolo Agnolucci, Luca Bizzarri, Roberto Tundo and Gino Ciofini have been indicated. In turn, in the past months, the Judiciary indicated the names of the jury and other key authorities of the event such as the field master, the sergeant of infantry and the chancellor.
