BOLZANO. Hell lasted a few moments. The time of an unexpected and devastating explosion which, about twenty minutes after midnight between Thursday 20th and Friday 21st June, hit and tore six workers at theAluminum Bozen, inside the factory in via Toni Ebner, in the industrial area of Bolzano. It all happened suddenly, during the casting and cooling phase of molten aluminum in a mold: the explosion was very powerful, so much so that it literally ripped apart the warehouse on the side facing Via Brida and knocked out the electricity in a vast area around the factory.

The one who raised the alarm and asked for help was the one among them who was fortunate enough to be furthest from the epicenter of the explosion at that moment and, therefore, suffered less serious injuries. The rescue was immediate and the scene that occurred to the permanent firefighters of Bolzano – with volunteers from Bolzano Centro and Oltrisarco – who quickly put out the flames, and to the health workers of the White Cross and the Red Cross apocalyptic.

In the total destruction, at a temperature that was still very high, four of the six workers lay on the ground, unconscious: fully hit by the flames, they all had very serious burns on their faces and on a large part of their bodies. The conditions of the other two workers, however, who were injured and in shock, appeared less serious. There emergency car was activated immediately and, within a few minutes, after being stabilized, five of the workers were already on helicopters which transferred them to the major burn centers in Verona, Padua, Milan, Bolzano and Murnau am Staffelsee, in Bavaria.

They are Mboup Mor-diarra (44 year old Senegalese), the Tunisian Oussama Benyahaia, Djette Aboubacar (25 year old Senegalese), Diallo BocarSenegalese, e Hyseni Sokol, 34 year old Albanian. The most serious and Artan Vila, a 48-year-old Albanian who is fighting between life and death in Milan. She suffered very serious burns to her face and a large part of her body. They have undergone cutting-edge treatments and the next few hours will be decisive: in the best case scenario, a long and extremely painful path awaits them, necessary for the reconstruction of the destroyed epidermis and dermis.

The causes

Among the first hypotheses is that of a accidental spilling of water on the hot metal and in a liquid state. However, it will be the technical investigations that will be arranged by the prosecutor’s office, and which will be carried out in cross-examination, after the appointment of experts, that will provide full clarity. The investigators will be able to count on crucial elements provided by the images collected by the cameras in the department, which was immediately seized. For this, the acting prosecutor Axel Bisignano clarified, with a press release, that «at present there are still no suspects, as the investigating bodies have to reconstruct the positions of guarantee within the plant on the basis of the company documentation that was acquired following the initial interventions».
