Missing persons – Anci Puglia: Agreement signed in the Prefecture of Bari

The Apulian Prefects, the General Prosecutors and the Regional Prosecutors, the representatives of the Puglia Region Health Department and the Forensic Medicine Institutes and services participated in the signing. Delegate Piero Paparella, member of the Steering Committee, was present for Anci Puglia.

Today, at the Hall of Mirrors of the Prefecture of Bari, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed aimed at adopting and sharing specific procedures for the identification of nameless corpses. The event saw the participation of the Government’s Extraordinary Commissioner for Missing Persons, Prefect Maria Luisa Pellizzari.

The Prefect of Bari, Francesco Russo, played a crucial role in territorial coordination with the other provinces and highlighted the importance of the sensitivity of the signatory institutions: “The sensitivity of the signatory institutions is one of the most important aspects of this protocol”.

ANCI Puglia, represented by the delegate Pietro Paparella, member of the Steering Committee, participated in the signing of the Agreement. This protocol, already being tested in Lazio and Lombardy, aims to simplify and speed up the authorization process for comparing the DNA of unidentified bodies with that of relatives of missing persons.

The new procedures will be used to improve and further increase the use of the current DNA Database, thus contributing to informing and raising awareness among public opinion and sector operators of its fundamental importance.

The Prefects, the General Prosecutors and the Regional Prosecutors, the representatives of the Health Department of the Puglia Region and the Institutes and services of Forensic Medicine also participated in the signing, making clear the broad institutional collaboration necessary to effectively address the problem of missing people.
