Initiative to promote gender equality in city sport

The municipal administration of Matera has decided to join the “Ethical charter for overcoming gender gaps and discrimination in sport”. This decision was taken on the proposal of the city president of the Soroptimist Club, with the aim of promoting gender equality and combating any form of discrimination in the sporting environment.

The Ethics Charter, also defined as the “Ethics Charter for women’s sport”, was developed by Assist and updated in 2023. It aims to protect the rights of athletes, promote equal opportunities and the use of inclusive gender language, and raise awareness sporting culture in general. The promotion of gender equality and women’s self-determination are in line with Objective 5 of the UN Agenda 2030.

Despite growing female participation in sport, women continue to be underrepresented in the decision-making bodies of sports institutions at local, national, European and global levels. The Matera City Council expressed satisfaction with this important provision, highlighting the importance of sport as a vehicle of values and a tool for growth for young people without distinction of sex.

On Sunday 30 June, at 7.30 pm, at the Fabbrica del Carro trionfale in the Piccianello district, Mayor Domenico Bennardi will speak at the round table sponsored by the Municipality of Matera on “Women and sport: integration, education and respect, psychophysical well-being. The value of sport”. At the end of the event the signing of the Charter will be formalised.
