The Omceo of Agrigento, chaired by Santo Pitruzzella, qualified in the “Excellence in Scientific Information” section – “Events and Congresses” category with the event held last March at the Lucchesiana Library, on the theme “Artificial intelligence: medical aspects and ethics” which was followed by the exhibition “Ars medica: manuscripts and ancient books of the Lucchesiana Library”, together with the Omceo of Venice (“Artificial intelligence in healthcare, prospects, opportunities and risks of inevitable progress”); of Cosenza (Genetics and Medicine: opportunities and limits”); of Enna (Advanced strategies for the control of dyslipidemia: a modern therapeutic path”).

“The conference for which the National Federation of Orders of Surgeons and Dentists (Fnomceo) will award us this important award – comments Santo Pitruzzella – is the result of joint work between the Culture commission of Omceo; the member of the Board of Directors, Salvatore Casà; the scientific director, Carmelo Graceffa and the team of the Lucchesiana Library. We are honored to receive this important recognition which gives us the strength to continue moving forward and doing better.”

The conference and the related exhibition promoted by the Order of Agrigento, as will be remembered, aimed to make people reflect on contemporary problems and implement a comparison between past and present. At the center of the debate was a careful reflection on the potential of artificial intelligence with serious ethical implications that mainly concern the human being, his freedom, his conscience, his capacity for self-determination.

“Algocracy, algorethics, opportunities and risks are the terms that prevail in debates on artificial intelligence – declares Salvatore Casà, dentist and organizer of the event – We had the intuition to anticipate these topics and associate artificial intelligence with the most traditional there may be: the ancient book. While the world debates with many arguments about potential and risks, generative software is becoming more and more performing and becoming increasingly widespread”.
