Around 4.30 pm on Thursday 20 June, numerous citizens of the Tuscany they reported the perception of a loud bang, a “shock” and glass in the windows shaking. We immediately thought of a earthquakewarned byElba island up to the coast of Grosseto and Livorno. But no earthquake appears to have been recorded by the INGV – National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology.

Earthquake shock on Elba Island?

Scary afternoon in Tuscany, where around 4.30pm a warning was given powerful roarfollowed by what was perceived as a shock.

The event started from the Island of Elba, in the maritime area between Portoferraio and Portoazzurrocausing panic even among swimmers on the beach.

But, as witnessed by many citizens on social media, noise and shock were felt along the entire coast, up to the provinces of Grosseto and Livorno.

At first the seismic event was confirmed by the governor of the Tuscany region Eugenio Giani.

Giani, with a post on Facebook, announced a seismic event, reassuringabsence of injuries or damage to property and homes.

But the confirmation of the earthquake by the INGV never occurred and, shortly afterwards, the governor himself corrected: “From the seismographs and surveys It wouldn’t be an earthquake at the moment”.

The denial of the Civil Protection

The silence of the INGV was finally confirmed by the regional room of the Civil Protection which declared that “there was no earthquake”.

The most probable hypothesis, reports the local press, is passage of one or more supersonic aircraft who flew at very low altitude.

Military fighters are capable of reaching such a speed as breaking the sound barriercausing intense noise and vibrations on the ground.

The hypothesis would be strengthened by the amplitude of the vibrations, felt fup to Versilia and Follonica: the coastal strip could coincide with the path taken by the aircraft.

In Tuscany, right near the coast, in the Tombolo Estate in the municipality of Pisa, it is found Camp Darby.

One of the main ones military bases of the Italian army, where US military units are stationed and operational.
